It is a known fact that the future generations will decide the fate of this planet. It is requisite to give children the basic idea of the planet’s condition. When a child is taught about the seriousness of the issues right from his/her childhood, they would pave a green way for their generations. Children should become sober, when it comes towards nature and this nature come with teaching and experience. This will make the children understand the earnestness towards the nature.
Children learn a lot of things in school, and along with that knowledge, let them learn to conserve the nature too. The deputation is to enforce a recycling or composting plan, and also these students can be taught about zero-waste in their own classrooms. We don’t have the command towards the janitorial staff to use green methods, but we can teach our children about the green means of cleaning using the vinegar and water. Green in school does not mean planting trees and asking the children to do the same way, but every small thing told by the teachers to protect earth can be an eye opener for the child. The teacher can also take the children for a small trip and tell them about the carbon footprint. Teachers can be a great inspiration for the children.
We learn a lot from school. Then why not about green life. Let us start to practice green life from our school days. A warning about the seriousness of the nature and environment will make the students respond better in the future. The students should be taught about the pollution factor, water management and many other factors that are demolishing our planet. Parents are the first teachers; they should be an example to their children rather than showing the way towards planet’s destruction. There are lots of means to calculate the carbon footprint and this count can be shown to the students and give them tips to reduce it. The students should not be stressed about this fact, rather it can be made simpler by starting from the classroom, creating awareness about the energy wasted in the fans and lights in an empty classroom. The students can be given a checklist which has ‘switch off lights and fans’ so that they can follow it and also they will find it fun. Students can be told to come in bicycle or by walk; this can reduce the carbon emission. Students should not be ordered to come in a cycle or by walk, but they can be told about the health benefits of cycling and walking. This will make the students feel better and adopt cycles for school. Just the oral method will not work out with the children. The classrooms should be made eco-friendly. Green activities should be set-up by the teachers. The students should be shown the recycling process and they should be told to follow it in their daily life. The students should be shown how much waste has piled up in a day and how to recycle it. Sorting trash will help kids to understand how much waste they are creating in a day, and where it’s all coming from. Children love challenges, they should be challenged to use zero-waste materials and every student who follows it should be awarded. A competition can be set-up in the school and the class which makes an eco-friendly month can be awarded. This will create a competition and also make their life healthier.
Every classroom can be given a site and can be told to set up a garden and at the end of the year the best garden should be gifted. This will create a habit among the students to set up in their backyards. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization give lots of tips to execute such plans. The students should be taken out and allowed to plant trees and plants. A Nature Club can be set-up in the school. The zero-waste mantra is the important one. The composite pile can be set-up to ensure the connection between the nature, food and the environment. A worm bin can be set-up in the classroom. A worm bin is an organic matter that is decomposed and recycled as a fertilizer. The process of composting requires a heap of wetted organic matter, otherwise called as the green waste. This green waste breaks down into humus after some weeks. Worms and fungi further break up the material. The fungi and the bacteria manage the chemical process of converting the inputs into CO2, heat and ammonium. This mixture is rich in nutrients. This mixture can be used in landscaping, gardens, agriculture and horticulture. This mixture helps the soil in a lot of ways, such as, soil conditioning, addition of humus into the soil, as a fertilizer and also as a pesticide. This composite helps in erosion control, wetland construction, land and stream reclamation and lot more. This breaking down is done mainly by anaerobic bacteria and so this can also be used to produce biogas through anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion is a process which is being carried out in many parts of the world. This process is Eco friendly and also can be used to enrich the soil in a natural way.
Even schools in urban areas can set-up all the green ways in their educational centre. Classrooms can be made wonderful, with some plants and climbers. This will change the mood of the students and also will make them healthier. The school can organize a nature camp rather than a field trip which can be costly. The Nature Protection centres are always ready to send volunteers to schools and other educational institutions to demonstrate the recycling methods, gardening, eco-friendly gadgets and other green ideas. They also teach us ways to reduce the carbon footprint and to improve the condition of our planet. The main motive is to unite the parents and the teachers in a better way so that the teacher alone doesn’t need to focus on the green living programs. Inject the green ways into fresh blood.
